Society at Windmill Weekend
Windmill Weekend 2011 as seen through one of the
of Henry Beston's Outermost House.
Between 2004 and 2008, the Henry Beston Society participated in the festivities at Eastham's Windmill Weekend. Each year, the Society maintained a booth on the Windmill Green during the two-day event.
In 2005, the Beston Society took part in the Windmill Weekend parade, featuring Henry Beston riding in back of the HBS truck. Henry was clad in his sailor suit and threw candy and asparagus to the Eastham crowd.
In 2006, Cape Associates builders of North Eastham built the Outermost House "Playhouse" to raffle off during the weekend. The house was showcased on the Windmill Green during the course of the weekend and was part of the parade. The event raised over $2,200 for the Beston Society. The playhouse was on display in front of Seaman's Bank in North Eastham for two months prior to Windmill Weekend.
The 2008 table featured Beston/Outermost House artifacts and several items that were raffled off, raising over $500 for the Society. A small Outermost House replica, constructed by Dick Gidman of Truro, was also on exhibit.
In 2011, the Beston Society returned to Windmill Weekend with an "Outermost Outing" raffle, with a weekend in October at Inn at the Oaks in Eastham as a grand prize. On exhibit was an actual window from Beston's Outermost House.
